First Reiver Team Ever to Play for a Championship
ALBANY, Ga. - Iowa Western Community College's women's soccer team tries today to bring home the Reivers' first national championship. The Division I title will be on the line as Iowa Western (20-1-1) meets Young Harris, Ga., Community College (16-1-1) at 5 p.m.
The Reivers, ranked No. 5 nationally, pulled off a pair of upsets to advance to the final. Iowa Western avenged its only loss of the season with a 3-0 win over No. 4 Laramie County in the quarterfinal. A bigger shocker came in the semifinal when Iowa Western ousted No. 1-ranked Monroe Community College on penalty kicks, 4-2, after the teams played a scoreless game through regulation and two 10-minute overtimes.
Young Harris went to form. The No. 2-ranked Mountain Lions topped No. 7 Harford 3-0 in the quarterfinals and beat No. 3 Schoolcraft 2-0 in the semifinals.

Emotions Run High On Second Day
It was an emotional day on Friday during the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Tournament at Darton College. Two teams were eliminated from the tournament while a new national champion will be crowned in 2006.
Monroe (NY) Community College will not be able to defend their title as they were upset by #5 seed Iowa Western Community College. Both teams survived numerous scoring attempts in regulation play but no one was able to manage a goal. Even with overtime, the outcome was the same and it became the second game of the tournament to be decided by penalty kicks. Iowa Western prevailed and will now play for the national championship on Sunday.
In earlier action, Laramie County (WY) Community College got one goal from Shauna Fuentes in the first half and that was all they would need to eliminate Navarro (Texas) College 1 – 0. LCCC will now play Mesa (AZ) Community College for fifth place at noon on Sunday. The Thunderbirds overcame a 2 – 1 deficit at the break and scored three goals in the second half to oust Harford (MD) Community College from the national tournament.
With Monroe’s loss, they will now play Schoolcraft (MI) College for third place. Young Harris (GA) College dropped the Lady Ocelots in the final game of the evening 2 - 0. The Region XVII champion will now face the talented Iowa Western Reivers for the national championship. The game is slated for Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Darton College soccer complex.

First Round Complete At Women’s National Tourney

There were no real surprises in the first round as three teams were able to keep their opponent off the scoreboard. Monroe Community College, Iowa Western Community College, and Young Harris College all recorded shutouts in their matches.
The #1 seed Monroe (NY) Tribunes proved to be too much for Navarro College (Texas) as they scored three goals in the second half of play to post a 4–0 victory. The defending national champions now advance to the semi-final game and will meet #5 Iowa Western Community College. The Reivers were led by freshman Kim Olsen who scored two goals in the game to help Iowa Western to a 3 – 0 win over #4 seed Laramie County Community College.
Region XVII champion Young Harris College (Ga.) wasted little time in scoring as Megan Bruso pushed the first score across with less than eight minutes into the game and the Mountain Lions cruised to a convincing 3–0 shutout of #7 seed Harford (Md.) Community College. Newcomer Kennya Cordner sealed the victory for Young Harris with an early goal in the second half.
In the final game of the night, Schoolcraft College (Mich.) met #6 seed Mesa (Ariz.) Community College and struggled to contain the speed of the Thunderbirds early in the first half. Andrea Evans added the first goal for Mesa and it looked like they would take a 1–0 advantage into halftime. With the clock ticking down, Schoolcraft’s Jessica Austin found Stephanie Setaputri at the goal and she made it count with one second to spare before the break to make it 1–1.
The second half was a defensive struggle and the two teams went to overtime. Even with an extra twenty minutes, neither team could find the net. It would come down to penalty kicks and #3 seed Schoolcraft College was able to advance in the best match of the first round.
Second day action resumed on Friday, Nov. 17, with four matches beginning at noon. There are no games scheduled on Saturday. Winners from Friday’s games will advance to Sunday’s competition and the national champion will be crowned that evening. The championship game will begin at 6 p.m.

Iowa Western earns spot in national tournament
PEORIA, Ill. - The weather was cold and windy Saturday afternoon for the district women's soccer championship here, but all Iowa Western Community College felt was sunshine.
The No. 6-ranked Reivers are going to the Division I national tournament after a 1-0 win over No. 8 and host Illinois Central.
Freshman Kim Olsen's low shot, with the help of a bit of a deflection, found the net with just 3:26 left in regulation to make the difference.
"I'm just trying to catch my breath," said Iowa Western coach Ammon Bennett. "It wasn't our most brilliant day."
The Reivers opened by missing three opportunities in the first five minutes. Those are things that come back to haunt. But Illinois Central, who left its attack to a pair of fast forwards, had one bid turned aside by a great save by Reiver sophomore goalie Kira Lazenby.
The second half Central "bunkered down more," said Bennett. "They kept four back and we were not getting good looks. We kept the pressure on until Olsen finally was able to work here way in."
The Reivers finished with a 22-7 advantage in shots on goal.
"The kids played hard," said Bennett, "on not their best day. We will have to be better at nationals."

Reivers thump No. 5 Marshalltown
In a yo-yo season, the Iowa Western Community College men's soccer team picked the right team to come out with its best match of the season.
The Reivers thumped No. 5-ranked Marshalltown Community College, 3-0, Saturday at Iowa Western in Region XI action.
"We played our best soccer of the season," said Iowa Western coach Ammon Bennett. "We played perfect team soccer.
"We have had a lot of frustration getting everyone on the same page. I give assistant coach (Jeff) Ginn a lot of credit here. I turned to him before this match and told him to see what he could do to get us on the same page."
Freshman Justin Harrington had two goals and freshman Zach VanWagener had the other. Freshman Kourtney Knowles, freshman Lance Fondran and freshman Sibit Lam had assists.
"This is a big game which gives us a confidence boost," said Bennett. "But we have to take this big moment and build on it so we have another big moment."
The Reivers are down to a critical few region games. Iowa Western and Iowa Central are battling for second in the region. Central has the tiebreaker, having beaten the Reivers twice. Central does have a match with Marshalltown left. The second-place team (Marshalltown is still two games ahead of everyone in the region) gets a first-round bye for the post-season tournament. The third-place would have to play three matches in five days to win the title, a tougher road.
Iowa Western has home Region XI matches against North Iowa Area (Wednesday) and Dakota County Tech (Friday) this week to wrap up the regular season.

Reiver Men Dancing in Coffeyville, Kansas
Playing in a stadium that fits 5,000, the Reiver men made the most of the time before the Women's match. The music was boomin' and the boys were bouncin'. Mainly Juice (Justin Harrington) stole the show. Way to represent D12 B Rabbit!
