Reivers easily sweep Scott

Iowa Western Community College put on an offensive show Tuesday on the Reivers pitch and won a pair of Region XI soccer matches.

The women defeated Scott Community College 9-1 just ahead of the men's 8-1 decision.

In each game, the Reivers led 6-0 at halftime, making the second half a contest mostly for the reserves. Scott's goals came late in each game and only served to deny Iowa Western the shutout.

Iowa Western coach Ammon Bennett took the wins in stride. The Reivers are off to a 2-0 start in the region, but the victories have come against the two teams who were preseason rated to finish off the pace.

"In many ways," said Bennett, "Scott looked like a couple of teams (men and women) who drove five hours (Davenport), got off the bus and played. That drive takes a toll on your legs. That's part of what happened to our men on Saturday when we went down and played (and lost 5-0 to) Neosho.

"I reminded our players that we have to drive over there. It will be us that will have to get off the bus and play while they will have the fresh legs."

The women got three goals from former Lewis Central star Rikki Southard, two from former St. Albert star Laura Bomgaars and two from Whitni Davis. Kim Olsen had a goal and three assists. Brooklyn Barton had the other goal. Lindy Stauffer had two assists. Becky Pulham, Karley Nelson, Lewis Central's Courtnie Dennis had assists. Keeper Kira Lazenby finished with five saves.

Sophomore Eric Anderson had three goals, the first just three minutes into the men's contest. Trevor Eastman had two; Lewis Central's Luke Thomsen, Shawn McGuire and Jason Gaius had one each. Sibit Lam had two assists, Zach VanWagenen, Kourtney Knowles and Jared Jensen had assists.

Looking at both the Reivers' teams "offensively we're getting solid," said Bennett, "but defensive we have some holes to plug.

"I look at both of our teams and I know we can still be much better."

Iowa Western returns to action Saturday. The Reivers host Barton County in a non-region doubleheader, the women play at 2 p.m. with the men to follow.

Records: Women: Scott (1-1, 4-1-1); Iowa Western (2-0, 3-0)
